Global Warming Affecting The Food Chain

The marine food chains are severely being affected by the results of global warming. The continious abundance of carbon dioxide is not only affecting humans, but underwater species as well. The high levels of carbon dioxide in the ocean results in the increase of acidity, thus removing the carbonate ions with are vital for the survival of marine organisms. With the great amounts of carbon dioxide present in the sea water, the results can be catastrophic. This can result in the extinction of many marine species. If certain small organisms living in the water begin to come extinct, than an ongoing chain of hazerdous effects will occur. Predators will no longer be able to hunt for their prey, thus eliminating more marine species. Ultimately, this can result in an absence of marine life. Not only will the ocean's creatures slowly begin to dissappear, but the beauty of the ocean will slowly vanish as well. Coral reefs, and other plants in the ocean will vanish. This long chain of events will soon affect the human condition. Fishermen will fail to bring home food because of the lack of species present in the ocean. The effcts of global warming on marine life are severely harmful. Society needs to find a way to perserve the marine life.

So What If Global Warming Isn't True...

Many of my previous posts regarding global warming were embedded with facts explaining global warming in detail. My opinion of the issue has been slightly incorporated in my recent posts, but has not yet been fully articulated. Although I have researched this topic thoroughly, I am not one-hundred percent certain that this theory of global warming is completely valid. I do believe that it's true, but I could be wrong. And if i'm wrong than what does it matter? Global warming advocates believe that conserving the earth's energy, and perserving the environment is a key asset to perserving our planet's health. What is wrong with that? Even if this thoery isn't true, following all of the precautions to stop global warming can still strongly benefit our environment. What is the problem with conserving energy, and adapting your automobile to be more environmentally friendly? One is still benefiting the environment by following these precautions. People need to stop focusing on the validity of global warming, and focus on more important issues. Every one is entitled to their own opinion, and one must respect that. However, spending endless amounts of time attempting to disprove global warming isn't rational. Keeping the environment clean and safe is harmless, and more important, beneficial. With every argument there's always an opposing side that obtains valid arguments. I do believe that global warming is present in this world. There is an evident increase in the Earth's surface temperature, and this can result in extremely negative long-term effects. After noticing all of the climatic changes and etc..., I'm not focused on the certanity of global warming, but more focused on improving our planet, and avoiding a potential disaster. I believe that people ignore this issue because it won't affect them in this present lifetime. This is an extremely selfish stance. Society needs to focus on the good of our planet, so that others that are unborn can be blessed with the beauty of this Earth. Yeah, if global warming is true than the long-term effects might not appear for hundreds of years. But one cannot be selfish and only care about their own generation. One needs to consider the future of this planet.

The Greenhouse Effect

The Greenhouse Effect is the rise in the earth's temperature due to certain gases such as CO 2, water vapor, nitrous oxide and methane that trap energy from the sun. These gases are extremely vital to the Earth's overall temperature. In the absence of these gases, heat would go back into space, thus making the Earth's temperature significantly colder. Since these gases are key to the warmth of our planet, they are labeled as greenhouse gases. Here's a little background information on greenhouses just incase you forget their main purpose. In a greenhouse, the glass panels are used to capture heat from the sun, but do not allow the heat to escape. This gives the plants great amounts of heat so that they can survive, and prosper in the winter. The greenhouse gases in our atmosphere can compare to the function of the glass panels in a greenhouse. First, the light from the sun enters the earth's atmosphere moving through the different layers of greenhouse gases. The sunlight than approaches the Earth's surface, and the land and water absorb the energy from the sunlight. The energy is than sent back into the earth's atmosphere, thus causing Earth to have an increase in temperature. In summary, the greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere compare to the glass panels in a greenhouse. The energy is absorbed, and the heat remains causing the increase in temperature.

Global Warming As A "Myth"

After researching the different causes and effects of global warming, I ran into a website that states different reasons supporting the fact that global warming is a myth. Although these statements contradict many of the arguments supporting global warming, there is always an opposing side to every argument. There will always be someone in this world that will say "well this isn't true." Here are some of the arguments opposing the validity of global warming on this planet. Anti global warming advocates state that scientists have not observed any significant change in the increase of global temperature. I find this claim to be vague. And I quote myself, "that scientists have not observed any significant change in the increase of global temperature." So there is a change in temperature, but it's not significant? Who determines what's significant and what's not significant. There is an obvious change in the Earth's surface temperature, and one can notice due to the rise in sea levels which result from melting glaciers. There are several prestigious institutions that can justify the increase in the Earth's surface temperature. Look, just because Al Gore was a primary advocate for global warming doesn't mean that the theory is false. I believe that many people relate the idea of global warming to Al Gore, thus ignoring its overall importance, and long-term consequences.

One Way To Reduce Global Warming Pollution

There are many ways to help reduce pollution that is causing global warming. As I stated in an earlier post, one way to help reduce pollutants is to produce more environmental friends automobiles. Thus, automotive industries should produce more cars that burn less gas, and operate more efficiently to help benefit the environment. Unfortunately, this isn't really happening. The automotive industry has created many cars that are environmental friendly, but have yet to push the sale of them. This is because more americans are focused on other important assests when purchasing a car. Gas mileage, and other luxorious aspects become the primary decision when purchasing a car. In order for more environmental friendly cars to be manufactored, the American public needs to demand them. Another way to decrease global warming pollution would be to to increase the use of renewable energy. Examples of renewable energy would be wind, sun, etc...Conserving energy is an amazing start to eliminating global warming pollution on this planet. The only problem is not enough of the population care to help the environment. People have other issues that they find more important. If society keeps ignoring global warming, than the long-term effects will become more harmful. Yeah maybe our generation will not experience these effects, but our great or great great grandchildren might one day be harmed because we decided to ignore this potential catastrophe.

The Day After Tomorrow

I'm sure that many of you have seen the thirlling movie, The Day After Tomorrow. Although the plot of this movie may be a little dramatic, it sets up a picture of the potential effects global warming may have on this planet. After the movie was released to the public, MSNBC produced an article commenting on the disastrous affects that were illustrated in the movie. In one portion of the movie, the temperature's in New York City plummet from chilly to unbearably freezing. Critics state that this immediate drop in temperature is extremely unlikely, but could happen over a long period in time. In another scene, there are several military officials in a helicopter, and the temperature's dropped so dramatically that the engines froze, and they crashed to the ground. After impact, a man attempts to open the doors to the helicopter, but immediatly after opening the door he freezes to death! It's mindblowing. The director of this movie purposely exaggerates in this manner to show the potential outcomes of global warming on Earth. Another alarming scene is when numerous amounts of tornado's strike Los Angeles. The city is destroyed in such a small period of time. Again, the directior is being extremely dramatic, but critics state that the the change in climate can cause severe hurricanes and other harmful storms. This movie serves as a good warning to what could possibly happen one day if the world ignores globlal warming.

Temperature

Here is a compelling statistic that might catch your eye. THROUGHOUT THE 20TH CENTURY, THE AVERAGE SURFACE TEMPERATURE OF THE EARTH HAS INCREASED BY 1.4 DEGREES FARINHEIT! This alarming statistic illustrates that there is a severe increase of temperature in the Earth's atmosphere. This is not good at all! Another vital statistic is that in the past fifty years, the temperature of Eastern Russia, Western Canada and Alaska has increased by 7 degrees farinheit. Temperature plays a key role in the ongoing global warming dilemna. With the dramatic increase in the Earth's temperature, certain ice glaciers throughout the world can slowly begin to melt. This is not something that people should ignore! Society is acting severely selfish by ignoring this problem. This increase in temperature will cause an increase in the sea levels. The Earth's sea levels have risen four to eight inches in the last century. The rise in the sea levels can ultimately cause severe flooding. I believe that this increase in temperature and the increase in sea levels is extremely chilling. The rising of temperature on this Earth will slowly begin to affect the human condition. Nature will begin to adapt to this change in temperature, but not in a good way. At least 279 different species have already migrated north to escape these rising temperatures. When will we begin to react to this problem? Or are we just going to sit around and wait for the devastating consequences.
